The network has ordered a 10th season of the Emmy-winning summer dancing series, which lured 5.5 million viewers (and a 2.0 demo rating) during its run earlier this year. Co-creator and judge Nigel Lythgoe conveyed his excitement on Twitter, with a hashtag that read "My Best Christmas Gift." 

At this time last year, he had taken to the social-media platform to make another type of show-related announcement: that SYTYCD's results show would be canceled, prompting an overhaul of the show's formula. The move followed a loss of traction -- both in buzz and ratings -- for a series that once was able to draw about 10 million viewers during an otherwise slow period of the year.

To be sure, SYTYCD is part of a growing cadre of aging reality franchises that continues to populate the networks' schedules, be it CBS' The Amazing Race, NBC's The Biggest Loser or ABC's Dancing With the Stars. American Idol falls in that category, too, though Fox will look to breathe new life into the latter with new judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban next month.

Fox president of alternative entertainment Mike Darnell nonetheless is committed to the dancing staple, which still manages to rank No. 1 in its time period among the key younger demos. “I couldn’t be more proud of the amazing work that Nigel and the entire So You Think You Can Dance team has done over the past nine seasons,” he said in announcing the news. “This show is truly one of the most compelling series on television, and I can’t wait to bring it back for Season 10.”

The SYTYCD team will begin auditions Jan. 18 in Austin. Detroit, Boston, Memphis and Los Angeles are among the other locales to follow.
