Friday just all-around disappointing
Back in 1984, Friday nights housed the hits "Miami Vice," "Dallas," "Falcon Crest," "Benson," "Hunter," "Webster," "Dukes of Hazzard" and "V" (the guinea pig-gulping version).
Now that was a night of TV. Spectacularly cheesy at times ... if not most of the time ... but entertaining.
Today Fridays are a dreary infirmary for dying dramas, repeats and news magazines. Between DVRs, cable and the evening being less of a family night of viewing than in years past, broadcasters are struggling to figure out what to do with Fridays. It's a real concern when not one program registers more than a 2.0 rating in the adult demo.
Last night, CBS "won" with "Ghost Whisperer" (8 million viewers, 2.0 preliminary adults 18-49 rating) up a tenth from last week and "Medium" (8.2 million, 1.9) and Numbers" (8.2 million, 1.8) flat. ABC and NBC tied, with the former running "Supernanny" (5 million, 1.4), "Ugly Betty" (4.5 million, 1.3), which climbed a tick this week, and "20/20" (6.7 million, 1.9). NBC's "Law & Order" (7.5 million, 1.7) was flat, followed by "Dateline" (7.3 million, 1.7) and an on par "Jay Leno Show" (4.7 million, 1.2.) Fox aired repeats. The CW's "Smallville" (2.7 million, 1.2) was steady in the demo and hit a season high among total viewers.
