Week 2: O'Brien tops Letterman despite scandal

For the second week of the official broadcast season, NBC's "Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" edged out CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman" in the adult demo,

"Tonight (2.7 million, 1.1 adults 18-49 rating) beat "Late Show" (4.4 million, 1.0) by a mere tenth, though lost by a fair margin among total viewers.

Letterman topped O'Brien on both counts during the first week of the season when he was bolstered by appearances by president Barack Obama and former pres Bill Clinton. The extortion scandal helped Letterman's numbers late last week, though not enough to stay in the lead on both measures.
