NBC affiliate plans to dump Jay Leno

Leno UPDATED: In a worrisome sign for NBC's game-changing primetime makeover plans, a Boston affiliate is refusing to air Jay Leno's new 10 p.m. talk show next fall.

WHDH Channel 7 in Boston announced it will air its own hourlong local newscast instead.

Explaining the move to the Boston Globe, station owner Ed Ansin said he believes a newscast will draw higher ratings than Leno.

"We feel we have a real opportunity with running the news at 10 p.m. We don't think the Leno show is going to be effective in primetime," Ansin said. "It will be detrimental to our 11 o'clock. It will be very adverse to our finances. It fundamentally is a better financial plan for us. We are already suffering from weak lead-ins."

Ansin's rebellion of dumping NBC's fall scheduling plans into the Boston Harbor could turn into a nightmare scenario for the network if other affiliates attempt to join the cause. Even Boston defecting by itself is an issue -- it's the seventh-largest market.

"NBC needs all hands on deck to make this change work for them," said Bill Carroll, vp director of programming for Katz Television Group. "But NBC has inferred that their decision was a business decision to benefit NBC and not necessarily their affiliates and their key late newscasts, so stations will look at their own interests and may make decisions in a similar fashion. By announcing early, Boston may spur others to follow and make them less of a target. And they can also get a sense of the true feelings of the rest of the affiliate body to this drastic change."

The decision quickly drew fighting words from NBC's TV Network president John Eck:

"WHDH's move is a flagrant violation of the terms of their contract with NBC. If they persist, we will strip WHDH of its NBC affiliation. We have a number of other strong options in the Boston market, including using our existing broadcast license to launch an NBC owned-and-operated station."

Ansin countered to the Globe that his affiliate contract is unlike those of other stations and allows him the option of not airing Leno. He also told the paper that the Sunbeam-owned WHDH asked NBC for permission to air Leno at 11 p.m., but the network refused. So Ansin intends to air two newscasts going into Conan O'Brien's "Tonight Show" at 11:35 p.m.

NBC owns a Telemundo affiliate in the area that it could in theory relaunch as an NBC station. Sources said that there is at least one station up for sale in the Boston market.

"If anyone is looking to buy a station in Boston or any other market, there couldn’t be a better time to buy than now," said Frank Kalil, president of station broker Kalil & Co. "Prices are low concurrent with the economy which is turning as we speak and station values have no place to go but up."

(Folks, you heard it here first. There's never been a better time to buy a slightly used Boston affiliate, and at these prices they won't last.)

In an effort to show that this is an isolated incident and a not a wider trend, Michael Fiorile, chairman of the NBC Affiliate Board, issued a statement in support of NBC's plans.

"The NBC affiliates are very excited about the new Leno show weeknights at 10 p.m.," Fiorile said.

The last time NBC got into a war with a local station was 2000, when Young Broadcasting outbid NBC for San Francisco-based KRON. The network retaliated by buying a nearby station and yanking KRON's NBC affiliation. Young recently filed for bankruptcy.

The broadcaster has been meeting with stations over the past weeks on tweaking the format of Leno's primetime show to minimize viewership dropoff into their local news. But in a way, part of the challenge here remains 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.. If the network's primetime programming were stronger and funneling a larger audience into the planned Leno hour, stations would presumably have more confidence about the change. Yet WHDH's move to dump the program so soon is somewhat surprising given that Boston is one of Leno's strongest markets.

NBC is certain to use its entire available arsenal to fight WHDH's decision. NBC cannot keep Leno off the air in such a major market, and any perceived weakness in its response to the affiliate could inspire other disgruntled stations to push against their late-night plans as well.

“It’s certainly going to start others thinking about [defying NBC],” Carroll said. “There was a parent-child relationship 25 years ago between the network and the affiliates, and that’s long gone. But I would think the majority of affiliate contracts don’t have that kind of flexibility.”

The news broke right between NBC Universal's scoring a settlement victory in its dispute over "Project Runway" moving to Lifetime, and Thursday's stellar performance of the "ER" series finale -- the latter headline taking on a new context this morning due to the show's strong 10 p.m. legacy.

The problem for NBC is there's a certain degree of public and industry sentiment on the side of the Boston affiliate. Few are excited to see the network remove scripted programming from 10 p.m. -- and that's including those rooting for NBC to succeed. It's part nostalgia, part business, but there's something about the maneuver that's like watching a friend give up on a longtime goal. Even though many agree with the network's executives that the play financially makes sense.

"Putting Leno at 10 p.m. was brilliant," one agent noted. "NBC will never win 10 p.m. But they will never lose money." -- With additional reporting by Nellie Andreeva

Wouldn't it make more sense for NBC to air the Leno show at 8? The 10 PM hour has less entertainment competition and is too close to the 11:30 hour and the other talk shows.

This is a HORRIBLE decision by NBC to replace quality scripted dramas such as Life with a cheap late night talk show. I have neither love nor hate for Leno, but would choose quality scripted dramas over a "variety hour" any day.

Whats the old expression?..."Don't bite the hand that feeds your brand?"

Whats the old expression?..."Don't bite the hand that feeds your brand?"

The first thought I got from this story is NBC is not a very good partner for a local station to deal with. In my market the local news always is 10:00 p.m. and the entire schedule starts an hour earlier (EST). I was just thinking if the local news is at 11:00 it seems to me the audience, might be really small because so many folks I know are already in bed. NBC appears to be really ruthless in dealing with local stations. Maybe that is why the few times I have talked with my local station folks about NBC they seemed to feel the network people cared very little for the local station's needs. No wonder NBCU has come across so arrogant in the way they have handled the name change for the soon to be former SCIFI Channel. We call it arrogance gone to seed in my part of the world,

I live in the Boston market and now will go try to find a way to lodge my complaint. Should WHDH think about timing of broadcasts in general (i.e. move news earlier? Maybe. But dropping the Leno from their line up makes me annoyed that they're deciding what I want to watch. And for a local broadcast - they really couldn't find another slot? That's ok, I'll go find some other channel that Leno will run on and watch that station, or webcast instead.

That's aswesome, Boston! About time someone called this Jay Leno plan for what it is--stupid. No one is going to watch after the first week, and then we'll all see that they gutted 10 pm programming for no reason at all. (Well, the reason of course is they can't figure out HOW to make a tv show that people watch). I say fire all the executives at NBC to start! These "programming" directors have no clue about what people watch or like. And Jay Leno isn't the solution! I'd rather watch news at 10 than Jay Leno

Apparently, all-too-few of those lambasting NBC's "Leno" decision remember that, during the '90s, both NBC (with "Dateline") and ABC (with "Primetime" and its various offshoots and "20/20") often populated four-out-of-five weeknights at 10 p.m. with non-scripted fare.

I feel the NBC is sabotaging Conan O'Brien show.

Because Jay Leno's show is still the Tonight show format but at 10:00 pm.
NBC doesn't want to lose old people, I mean his fans.

Boston ! Ouch-Jay grew up in Andover , Ma and went to college in Boston. But then again Conan is from Brookline and went to Harvard so not all hometown boys are equals at WHDH.

We don't want to see Conehead O'Brian or Jimmy Fallon, either. How about just turning your transmitters off after 10:00 PM? Or you could record and run the new Leno show in it's normal time slot: 11:35-12:35, and not show Conehead O'Brian at all, and not show Jimmy Fallon afterward (anything would better - infomercials, dead air, amateur puppet theater, finger painting, a sleeping cat, anything).

yeah! you show them stupid tv execs. at nbc !!! they cancelled my worst enemy, lipstick jungle, bionic woman, journeyman, and too many other good shows and then give jay millons more dollars.,thier is already a bunch of night time talk shows to watch! he just reads from a script anyway!! any body could do that for less!boycott any new thing they bringout!! why do they think thier new show kings is in the toilet already!!we are mad a bout our shows being cancelled! what about knight rider is it gone too?or kath and kim?

I do not watch Conehead O'Brian now and have no plans he is a cartoon. Jimmy Fallon is much better and new, I have not made up my mine on him. What I do know is the Jay is the one I watch and NBC part of GE doesn't care. It is like when Jack Welsh decided to move our customer service from Mt. Vernon and complaints went through the roof. He decides to make the move on a golf course with the mayor of Pittsfield. His comment was GE moves people all the time. He didn't mention that he moved Customer Service from the location where the product was made and put it in a place that no one had a clue what the product was. He did not care, Management needs to care about the product and the customer and not make changes on a whim. Management in this country needs to learn to make a product that the customer wants and not assume that what they send out will be taken.

You go, Boston! Leno has had his shot and he decided not to sign a new contract for his 11:35 slot. That was his choice--enough of him already! He has become rude and obnoxious and I get so annoyed by him that I never watch him anymore--he is so irritating. And now this jerk has messed up "prime time." No wonder NBC is such a ratings loser.

I have to agree with the person who said NBC is setting up Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Fallon to fail. I'm glad that Conan's contract calls for him to get paid if his show tanks! I hope Jimmy has a similar clause in his contract.

I have to give this Boston station kudos for standing up for its audience, which is more than I can say for NBC. It remains to be seen whether the network can pull this off, but I for one hope NBC fails miserably with this idiotic move.

I am glad Leno in on 10 o'clock. I have to work the next Day and go to bed at Eleven as most People do.
the only People up at Midnight are Teenagers and insomniacs.

Conan O'Brien show is boring. He can't help it. Some People are boring. He seems like A nice Guy. I feel sorry for Him. Letterman is more boring and A nasty Man. Jimmy Kimmel is alright.I like Uncle Frank the most.
