'Amazing Race' premiere sluggish on holiday weekend

Race The 14th-season premiere of CBS' "The Amazing Race" got off to a sluggish start Sunday night, with the three-day weekend giving shows lower-than-usual numbers. Broadcasters took the expected Presidents Day malaise on the chin, airing mostly originals instead of repeats.

"Race" was seen by 9.3 million viewers and received a 2.7 preliminary adults 18-49 rating and 7 share. That's down 16% from last fall and marks the slowest "Race" start yet. "Race" was followed by "Cold Case" (10.8 million, 2.4/6) and "The Unit" (8.3 million, 2.1/6).

ABC won the evening with below-average originals of "Desperate Housewives" (13.9 million, 4.9/12) and "Brothers & Sisters" (9.1 million, 3.1/8), both winning their hours. Fox was second with its animated comedy block (averaging 6.4 million and a 3.1 rating between 8-10 p.m.). CBS was third. NBC placed fourth with "Dateline" (7 million, 1.7/5) and Part 2 of the movie "XIII" (4.3 million, 0.9/2), which was the lowest-rated program on a major broadcast network.

"The Simpsons" (6.8 million, 3.2/8) changed its opening titles for the first time in 20 years for its HD debut last night. Here's the clips below.
