PTC outraged by 'Nip/Tuck' self-mutilation

Time for another example of moral outrage from the Parents Television Council.

Earlier this month, the PTC was horrified that NBC accidentally showed a raised middle finger during the Golden Globes live telecast.

Today their objection is to an episode of frequent PTC target "Nip/Tuck." The scene in question, video below, "depicted a woman using an electric carving knife to cut off her own breast."

“Not content with depictions or descriptions of bestiality, incestuous necrophilia, or blood-soaked stabbings, the narcissistic sociopaths behind the production and distribution of Nip/Tuck have chosen to establish yet another low-point in the history of television,"  said PTC President Tim Winter, wordily. "Tuesday’s episode portrayed sickening and bloody images of a woman who takes a mastectomy into her own hands in the crowded lobby of a doctor’s office."

Okay, well, yeah. The scene is pretty revolting. And it is nice to see the PTC object to violence instead of sex or language, as is usually the case (though the inclusion of a boob in the "Tuck" scene surely helped raise PTC's twitchy antenna).

But let's be honest here.

PTC is great for reporters because they offer instant media fights, in press release form. Their stories write themselves: “A parenting group has filed a Federal Communications Commission complaint against the CW today for airing a nude scene during a telecast of 'America's Next Top Model.'"

Sounds like a big deal, right?

When, really, it’s Winter and Co. filling out a form. Thousands of TV fans, upset with various things they see on the bright screen in their dark rooms every night, fill out forms of their own the next day -- leaving comments on message boards and blogs -- to no effect. But the head of the PTC issues a press release and it becomes a news event.

For "Tuck," the PTC plans to contact each of the show's advertisers and ask "whether bloody self-mutilation with an electric carving knife is in alignment with the corporate image they wish to portray."

But don't advertisers on "Tuck" -- not to mention its viewers -- already know the show sometimes contains shocking scenes of gore?

The point isn't meant to belittle the content concerns of the PTC, or of conservative viewers -- their objection to crass, lewd, vulgar content is understandable. Complaining is their right.

But I don't know they are any different -- certainly no more important in the larger scheme of things -- than the legions of disgruntled “Grey’s Anatomy” fans annoyed by the current ridiculous storyline that has Izzie having an affair with a ghost.

What’s more upsetting, really? And what has greater bottom-line consequences for a network? Blurred nudity on "Top Model"? Or “Heroes” making no sense this season?

Unless a network is hit by a massive FCC fine (which is very rare), a show's fans are the ones who really matter -- not those who object to content they wouldn't normally watch.

that happened at a global warming concert I went to... al gore spoke too long

It's so incredibly fake it's not even funny.

Liberals.....

Hey, if you have lousy writing you can only go to sex and violence.

COOL!

*yawn*

STUPID, perhaps. But certainly not "graphic."

Only the PTC would get its panties in a wad over this. Apparently there are a bunch of snoots who sit around wanking to this stuff all day. Otherwise, how would they know it's been aired?

That dim bulb Brent Bozell once went as far as to assemble a montage of clips of the stuff that offended him most. Probably working one-handed at the computer, if you get my drift.

Oh my Gosh -- our country is in bad shape when writers are coming up with this type of stuff in the name of entertainment!!! Bring back I Love Lucy and we will all be better off.

Most of the audience would have sliced her from ear to ear the show is soooooo bad.

this show jumped the shark long ago. nip tuck at best is/was a gimmick.

The PTC, much like the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) before it, is a self-serving outfit that wallows in the cesspool of mediocre entertainment in order to establish their moral superiority. If they want to attack Nip/Tuck, then challenge the poor writing and storylines, not the supposed negative affect it might have on children, for whom the show is not intended anyway.

Parents, monitor your children!!!

This is the most far out, unrealistic, most stupid and ridiculous thing I've seen on TV in awhile (not counting any so-called "reality" television)! If the PTC gets upset it should be for this reason only. Hopefully the PTC will sensibly let it go, not give Nip/Tuck the additional publicity.

Hmmm I need to buy one of those knifes... Thanksgivings Day is only 10 months away

PTC is downright wrong. FX is not a basic cable network...plus they always forget we live in AMERICA!!!! the land of the free. They need to stop fighting all these "holy battles" and start spending more time with their kids. Good intensions ruined this country with stuff like the PTC, MPAA, FCC. There is no big deal here and I think the PTC needs to be disbanded before a orwellian 1984 society is generated from this censorship. Stop ruining my life PTC and start working on yours.

What the heck was the purpose of that scene? More torture porn crap?? I watched one episode of Nip/Tuck and gave up on it.

How do you cook that?

I watch this Show and Love this Show, and Nip/Tuck is Not for Children, there is Plenty of warnings before the show and in the middle of the show etc..It Clearly States Mature Aud, Violence, Nudity Etc..
It comes on at 10pm on cable, and the FX network really is NOT for Young Children and furthermore, these Parents should Block channels that they do not want to watch too.
I am truly Digusted by People like this, they don't deserve to run the COUNTRY!! They should turn off and tune out everything they find offensive (period)Maybe they should Get RID of there TV

How cutting edge, how dangerous, how provocative...How boring. These hollyweird weirdo's should learn the art of story telling. I suggest they study the movies of the 30's 40's and 50's MAYBE they'll learn something about humanity MAYBE EVEN THEIR OWN.

That scene was about a woman, who had two family members that died from breast cancer. She wanted her breasts removed even tho she didn't have cancer yet. The Doc refused to remove them, soooo she did the first one herself. So, he removed the other one, her wishes in the first place.

@ALL-AMERICAN

Yeah, right. Find me some "fine storytelling" in--let's say for example "Too Many Girls," or "Holiday Inn," to name just two biggies of the thirties.

The vast majority of TV and motion picture entertainment is drivel. Get over it and read a book. (Come to think about it, why aren't all those outraged PTC types spending all their time pondering holy writ?)

Oh wah. I watch the show, I love the show. It's over-the-top 90% of the time, and is very entertaining. Was this shocking to me? Absolutely. When you view why the woman did this in the show, i.e. take it in context, it sends a powerful message about how some women view and fear breast cancer.

What's the purpose of this garbage?

Some get their panties in a bunch because the PTC or some other group asked for a little class on TV. Bet few of those same people see anything wrong with Congress trying to put a stop to Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, and others from legitimately using constitutionally protected political free speech! Remember the constitution only really protects political, and religious speech, and the press. Not Penthouse, movies and TV. It's OK to shut up the opposition, nationalize banks, health care, and business, but don't you dare touch my TV shows! You know it's only censorship when the Government is involved, so don't just stand by while the rest of you freedoms are stripped away one by one while you enjoy your sex and violence.

Right on Chuck...There is always a message in Nip/Tuck even if it comes out in a over the top way. I love the Show, if it doesn't have crazy scenes it would be BORING like everyother show on ABC, CBS, NBC...

Humanity has changed since the 30's 40's and 50's...

This is funny as hell! Put it on AFV!

If the PTC is "ruining your life," it's pretty pathetic to begin with. Give us a break. If they bother you that much, and they're that marginal & inconsequential, then just don't pay attention.

Diversity. We don't all get off watching Lawrence Welk and the lovely Lennon Sisters...

One mans garbage is another mans treasure. Don't be so quick to judge.

Your sad if you think there's been no damage done to the freedoms of this country by oganizations like these. People like you want to ignore it hoping it goes away...if history has proven anything its that you can't ignore it...or your ignorant, and the noose will get just a little tighter until its too late to break free...Dont ever call someone out with such hatred...its embarrasing...

Tell me PTC is wrong after a convicted felon full of Viagra rapes and murders your loved one. Our pop culture saturates us with violent music lyrics and images mixed with sexually stimulation. The breast self-mutilation is exhibit A. Subtle message from the devil inside: If an attractive woman willingly does this to herself, why can't I do this to attractive woman "x" living across the street? Yeah, I think that would make me feel sexually stimulated and powerful at the same time. She doesnt notice me now, but the knife will change that. Just like on "Nip/Tuck."

There is seriously something as much wrong with ALL of YOU as there is her!

We have enough evil inside us without having to blame the devil for giving us subtle messages.

Do shows with car chases make you go out and speed/race away from the cops? Sure looks like fun driving that fast!

Does watching an eating contest fill you with the desire to sit down at a buffet and become obese like so many other Americans?

If the subject you're describing puts A + B and does what you're suggesting, it's a result of their own mental defects, not television, etc... I didn't go out after watching that and chop my neighbors breasts off, or fantasize about it, and I've been watching Nip/Tuck since the beginning, so I'm absolutely saturated with these devilish subtleties.

Oops, I do remember I did get an urge and chopped a cantelope in half afterwards though. Hmmmm...

This show jumped the shark, did the Grand Canyon rocket car, and became more stupid than Sarah Jessica and the Sluts in City after the second season. But you get props for the funny reference to the idiotic Happy Days!

self pwnings are the best kind

So, it's ok when news networks show footage of real killings of U.S. soldiers and innocent women and children, but we cry over the fake stuff? Give me a break.

The people you are disgusted with don't run the country. If they did there wouldn't be shows like this on the tv and warning labels on tv do nothing but entice the children to watch their shows. You should know this since you have been doing what you were not since you were born...

I'll go with I Love Lucy, can we toss in Leave it to Beaver?

Another typical show from liberal Jews.

Maybe it bothers you so much because you know they have a point...

Its not that PTC is not paying attention to their kids its that they represent some of us that dont want to deal with some of this nonsense every time we turn on a TV.

They are in existence for the same reason many laws are in effect. For stupid people. You know the ones that don't know the coffee is hot and spill it then sue. Or for the kids that don't have a good family home because their parents are out at bars.

Really, does a scene like this need to be in the show to make it better or are people just excited about it because it brakes the rules? If it makes the movie better, then you have some pretty low standards.

I would worry if there were not organizations like the PTC objecting to objectionable content. Outrage is on its death bed in this society as it is.

As someone commented, I am sure the same people ridiculing PTC support the Fairness Doctrine and any other measure enacted to marginalize "right-wing hate-mongers."

Social conservatives and "progressives" are both entitled to their own forms of outrage, I suppose. Progressives get outraged at truth, conservatives get outraged at art, or what passes for it.
