NBC bans PETA's Super Bowl ad

Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals claims NBC is refusing to air its rather provocative Super Bowl ad.

The PETA ad "Veggie Love" has lingerie models frolicking amid broccoli and pumpkins with a tagline saying that "Studies Show Vegetarians Have Better Sex."

PETA says NBC's vp advertising standards Victoria Morgan rejected the ad because it "depicts a level of sexuality exceeding our standards."

Adds an NBC spokesperson: "The ad was rejected because it did not conform with our standards."

This means NBC is refusing to air an ad promoting a healthy diet, yet Budweiser will be the top Bowl advertiser for the ninth year running.

Of course, for PETA, being banned is arguably just as effective publicity as NBC actually airing its Super Bowl ad -- and a heckuva lot cheaper, too. Sources say NBC suspects the ad was deliberately created to be rejected by the network ("they knew this would never fly," one insider says).

Video and NBC's list of suggested edits after the jump.

PETA asked NBC what it would take for the commercial to air. NBC suggested the following cuts be made:

:12- :13- licking pumpkin

:13- :14- touching her breast with her hand while eating broccoli

:19- pumpkin from behind between legs

:21- rubbing pelvic region with pumpkin

:22-  screwing herself with broccoli  (fuzzy)

:23- asparagus on her lap  appearing as if it is ready to be inserted into vagina

:26- licking eggplant

:26- rubbing asparagus on breast

The network who brought us MILF Island gets prudish?
:-)

Brilliant. Peta makes an ad and saves the $30M to actually put it on. They'll get millions of web views.

The ad makes me want to buy a steak-burger, extra rare.

We need to eat more cows, they cause too much methane which leads to globa-wobba.

this is my favorite ad EVER.

What studies show vegs have better sex?

How can any network that shows all those way, way more explicit Victoria's Secret ads have the stones to say no to this?! P.S.: Actually not a great commercial; flashy, yes, but over-edited to the point where whatever was supposed to be sexy is gone before it registers.

For every animal you don't eat, I'll eat three.

Please, think of the animals: eat some!

Some of my favourite foods are vegetarians.

Stupid Super Bowl, who wants to watch a bunch of overpaid, grown men running around in tights chasing a stupid ball!

Vegetables aren't food, it's the stuff food eats... or the stuff you decorate food with.

While PETA is an organization that supports domestic terrorism from groups such as the ALF, there's nothing wrong with this commercial.

how many carrots must die!?

Flashy, fun to look at, but that's about it.

This ad is just retarded. And anybody who becomes a vegetarian to "have better sex" is just as retarded.

If you're going to become a vegetarian, do it for the "right" reasons (reasonable, morally guided reasons), not because a "study" says that some vegetarians are supposedly better in bed then non vegetarians.

I personally would like to read this study, because I'm going to take a wild guess that it's complete and utter bull shit.

im glad the networks are protecting me from sexually explicit commercials. Now i'll go back to watching 24, i have seen enough people get shot, killed, or blown up today.

Here I thought it'd be banned because the message is complete and utter bullshit.

Dear PETA,

Peer-reviewed citations for your claims, or STFU, please.

Thanks.

awsome answer

Spam.

I did a few studies on the matter.

Frank,
How could PETA support ALF. He ate cats.

I doubt that you are eating many vegetarians. Most commercially raised livestock eat other animals as a "protein supplement." Unless you eat solely meat from smaller producers whose feeding practices are verifiable, you likely eat many omnivores at best. At worst, they eat mainly corn and other animals, ground up finely.

the last thing peta wants is to have a superbowl ad accpeted by the network. they lose the free pr and have to cough up millions to air it. the whole "ban thing" is an annual publicity stunt.

- js.

OMG... they weren't serious about vegetarians being better in bed. Are you slow? It's just to give PETA a cool image with meat-eaters.

None you moron. It's for HUMOR purposes. Jesus H. Whateverhisnameis are people this slow and serious?

Smartest comment on this thread.

Agreed! I was, however, prepared to file a lawsuit for the obvious discrimination against cucumbers, which were left out of a video they clearly had a place in.

At least I could watch the first 11 seconds

Funny. This ad makes me want to touch myself.

This reminds me, don't forget about the 15th annual PETA BBQ which is coming up on Superbowl Sunday. Peta will provide tableware, beverages, and a large BBQ pit. SO grab a slab and head out to the PETA BBQ. There will be demonstrations on proper hog butchering, chicken boning, and grilling techniques sponsored by Kingford Charcoal.

Don't forget that they'll also be running some really raunchy ads including one for GoDaddy that involves two women in a shower.

The real motivation here is that they dislike PETA and they have vested interest in ensuring that the "McDonalds" ad that follows doesn't make people put 2 and 2 together.

Tomorrow is harvest day, and to them... it is the holocaust.

what, no carrot? This ad would not be banned in Europe. We are such a bunch of prudes!

You sir, are a twat.

Looks like veggie's have better ads as well as better sex!

I loved your response Meeky! Will you marry me? :)

Did you ever see a cow having sex, clearly they only eat plants by choice!

Three cheers for NBC! We ought to be able to watch the superbowl with our children.

FANTASTIC AD, BUT I'M STILL GOING DEER HUNTING

Makes me want to pull my meat out for some hot vegan...

I like it. WIth all the things on tv, i dont think this should be banned. Buuut.. i couldnt want to be 12 years old, sitting between my parents all hyped up about football and watch that come on. Awwwkaward

The sad thing though is that your concern is correct. Yes it's ridiculous to think that people would become vegetarian because they think they will have better sex, but I've seen and heard so many girls (high school to college age) that give reasons like "losing weight" "looking sexy" "meat adds belly fat"... for becoming vegetarian. Guess how many Vegetarian french fries you can eat before you become fat...

I don't necessarily agree with the "right" reasons for becoming vegetarian... so I certainly don't agree with the wrong reasons.
