ABC's 'Bachelor' and 'Beauty' premiere strong
With Fox winning the night with its Fiesta Bowl coverage, ABC's Monday reality block of "The Bachelor" and new series "True Beauty" had a strong opening, topping entertainment programming choices in the ratings.
"The Bachelor" (8.7 million viewers, 3.1 preliminary adults 18-49 rating and a 7 share) essentially matched last spring's debut. "Beauty" (7.6 million, 3.1/7) held its lead-in to conquer the 10 p.m. hour.
Fox's University of Texas vs. Ohio State pregame and game combined (16.1 million, 5.5/13) to deliver the top-rated nonchampionship bowl face-off since the network began airing the BCS in 2007.
With usual leader CBS placing third for the evening with repeats, that put NBC in fourth with the time-period premiere of "Superstars of Dance" (9.5 million, 2.7/7). This episode basically held the final half-hour rating from Sunday's premiere, and it maintained throughout its two hours. "Momma's Boys" (5.3 million, 2.0/5) improved slightly from its most recent performance.
The CW posted the return of "Gossip Girl" (2.9 million, 1.4/3), down a bit in its demos from its last original, while "One Tree Hill" (2.6 million, 1.2/3) improved in the adult demo.
Also, just in: Monday night's second season premiere of "Secret Life of the American Teenager" (4.4 million viewers, 1.9 million adults 18-49) was ABC Family's most-watched series premiere ever -- up 57% from its debut in July. If one wishes to continue the cable vs. broadcast brags that started last summer, "Teenager" beat "Gossip Girl" by 47% in viewers and 6% in the adult demo. Remember last year "Teenager" topped CW's "90210." For its second season, ABC Family decided to move the show against CW's flagship -- and, it should be noted, into "Teenager" series creator's Brenda Hampton's former "7th Heaven" time period.
