Tim Kring apologizes for calling fans 'dips***s'

"Heroes" creator Tim Kring apologized for calling his fans "saps and dipshits"  at the recent Screenwriting Expo panel for not using DVRs.

For those who have not followed this story in the blogsphere, it's been more entertaining than "Heroes" this season, with the NBC show's fans cast as offended victims and its creator in the role as the heartless villain (hey, he's got the goatee).

Here's Kring's original quote, first reported by IGN:

[Serialized storytelling is] a very flawed way of telling stories on network television right now, because of the advent of the DVR and online streaming. The engine that drove [serialized TV] was you had to be in front of the TV [when it aired]. Now you can watch it when you want, where you want, how you want to watch it, and almost all of those ways are superior to watching it on air. So [watching it] on air is related to the saps and the dips**s who can't figure out how to watch it in a superior way.

Time's blog did a detailed breakdown that enumerated all the ways this was a bone-headed statement, so I won't rehash them here. Basically, after weeks of "Heroes" losing ratings, a lingering hardcore group of viewers have stuck with the show, fans who are willing and able to keep track of "Heroes" confusing array of intertwining plots. The last thing NBC wants is for that remaining audience to feel insulted for watching the program live -- the primary manner tracked by advertisers.

Now an apologetic message from Kring (below) is making the rounds. NBC verifies its legitimacy but otherwise has no comment:

"I need to strongly apologize for the slightly mangled quote of mine that is making it’s way around the internet. It was made while trying to explain the rise in DVR and online audience for the show. I was making the point that these platforms now offer a superior way to watch the show (without commercials, with extra content, commentary, at the audience’s convenience, etc.) ... It was a boneheaded attempt at being 'cute' and making a point. Instead, it turned out to be just plain insulting and stupid."

One wishes to avoid piling on. Clearly Kring regrets what he said and anybody can slip up on a panel. But the matter has been lousy timing for the show, which has behaved in the ratings like a troubled freshman series rather than a third-year series. Ratings drain is common in returning programs, but the relentless plummet suffered by "Heroes" is unusual. The past few weeks seem to have bottomed out. If not, "Heroes" could go from NBC's top-rated drama to on-the-bubble for renewal by the end of the season.

On the heels of this news, Salon published a particularly brutal review, saying this about "Heroes" writing:

"Every other scene seems to boil down to the same arbitrary dramatic conflict: Two characters argue over what should happen next, even if they were assigned the exact opposite stances in the previous episode. It's just like debate club, only a little less interesting ... all any of these characters do is walk around, declaring their interest in saving the world over and over again."

The best way to make it up to you is to live up to my promise that the upcoming episodes of the show are fantastic. I think you’ll agree we’re really on a roll and we couldn’t be more excited about the last four episodes of “Villains” and the upcoming volume, “Fugitives”, which we feel will be a huge hit with the audience.

What this apology doesn't do is say "Sorry" for Kring admitting to lazy writing and a collapse of the creative processes of the show. If people who watch the show remember, for example, that there is an Irish girl stuck somewhere in the future that Peter should be giving a damn about, then the showrunner and the writers should make sure to address that and not ignore it. The only thing I get when I Google "ENJAI EELE" is STYLES spamming the hell out of every blog that mentions Heroes.

I don't understand his point that DVRs and streaming take away from serialized storytelling. If anything, it should help. With DVRs and streaming you can watch episodes back to back in sequence and understand all the subtlties occurring in each episode. I never got into Lost or Heroes on TV because I didn't watch them from the outset and would regularly miss episodes, so I never knew what was happening, and stopped watching. But then I started watching them online, from the first episodes, and now am hooked. What kills serialized TV is forcing people to only watch it at one time and only on TV. People are busy and don't have a lot of time, so let them watch when they can. Also, with online viewing you don't need to have the intro to each episode that is supposed to get everyone up to speed on what has been going on before the current episode. That frees up another minute in the show for some actual new developments.

To Styles: When I googled those names, primarily what I find is you plastering all over the internet in response to any Heroes criticism that people should google these names to see what a "thief" Kring is. When I finally DID weed through all that enough to find the actual court case, a quick five-minute readthrough showed the case was dismissed as being frivolous, having no basis in fact, and that the evidence clearly showed that the character of Isaac Mendez bore virtually NO resemblence to characters created by the plantiffs. Please stop. Seriously. Find something else better to do with your time. Like watching paint dry.

Re: Heroes, I'm hopeful that they can turn the show around. The first season was fantastic, the second, not so much, and now the show is just boring. I find myself saying after each episode "So, basically, nothing really HAPPENED. Everyone just stood around and TALKED about doing things." Granted the show's never been all that action-packed, but it used to be character-driven, and now it's just driven by hope that the writers will figure out what they're doing again one day.

Maybe as creator of Heroes, Krung, is feeling like he has lost control of the series.
Perhaps he should not have allowed streaming online, BUT when people need to get up to speed, at least they need not wait and catch the re-runs all in a row.
It is confusing and streaming allows re-watch or catch-up otherwise viewer/fan would throw up his hands and watch something NOT serialized. My dad loathed "continued"...without a "Josim Roswell" update...we are, alas, in the dark with the muchrooms and the aroma is not good. She is in a future that doesn’t exist anymore because the virus in season 2 never spread. Is she supposed to magically re-appear in present time? Guess what, in America you can take some one else’s ideas if you change or add on to them in any way. The only way he will get in trouble for stealing ideas is if Isaac is exactly the same as the artist’s character. The artists made a 15 min short story about an artist who predicted 9/11. While this sounds similar to heroes there are major differences. Isaac painted about other Heroes and a Bomb that destroyed all of New York (not just 1 building). Also a bomb and a plane are 2 different things. It is called expanding an idea or a spin off. While I don't think he is as gifted of a writer as I once thought after reading the lawsuit article, I don't think he did anything wrong.

Only black people play the race card. Let me guess what color you are……… It doesn’t matter what color Kring is, his show brought great revenue to NBC for 2 seasons. NBC will try and milk it for all it’s worth and then get rid of him if the money stops rolling in. Also the show always seems to explain everything in the last 2-3 episodes of the season. Why don’t people wait to see if it all makes sense once the whole story is told instead of bashing him for being a lazy, worthless writer half way through this season.

All he was trying to do was illustrate that DVR and online viewers are not included in the ratings. The current rating system is a joke anyways. They rely on a random sample of data to calculate whether or not advertisers will want to pay premium prices for that time slot. It would be better to monitor what every person in the world is watching at a certain time but that would violate our right to privacy, hence we are stuck with an imperfect system.

ABC is getting rid of Pushing Daisies and Eli Stone, but keeping Dancing with the stars and every other reality show. Who actually watches reality TV? It is horrible television and it is ruining our society. People now think it is OK to cheat, steal, and conspire (survivor, big brother) if it means you win money or fame.

Family Guy is a perfect example of how ratings do not work. Why was it brought back after 5 years if it wasn’t getting good rating? Because people did watch it they just weren’t Nielsen families.

caps ftw, ive watched the show from the beginning and the first 2 seasons were good, what happened to the characters? the kid with the computer powers we saw in the third season for a second, but that's it? and after 10 episodes in the 3rd season, 20 minutes have passed... too much of nothing is happening. it has to have a storyline that is quick and not stupid. hell we are 10 episodes into season 3 and we have no idea what is going on or at least i don't lol.
