Updated: McCain beats Obama. Unless ...

John_cindyUPDATED: If election night is half as close and contested as Thursday's ratings race, we're in for a heckuva evening.

John McCain's speech was watched by more viewers than Barack Obama's, according to Nielsen Media Research.

The Republican nominee beat Obama's record-setting convention speech viewership by 500,000 among broadcast and cable networks.

McCain's address at the Republican National Convention was seen by about 38.9 million viewers. Obama received 38.4 million.

That means McCain's speech is now the most-watched in convention history -- 41% higher than President Bush's acceptance speech four years ago, and 1% higher than Obama's address last week.

But wait.

If you add in PBS -- which is tracked by Nielsen as meter-market projections, but not counted among its regular national ratings sample -- Obama beat McCain.

PBS estimated that 2.7 million viewers tuned in last night and 3.5 million watched Obama. So if you include those viewers, Obama beat out McCain by an even slimmer margin, 41.9 to 41.6  million viewers.

Either way, a squeaker.

The usual practice is to use the numbers Nielsen announced. That's the official count, since a different measurement system is used for PBS, which unlike the others is not an ad-supported network. One could also try including viewers watching C-SPAN (which isn't tracked by Nielsen) or even online viewing. Given the amount of media attention that convention coverage ratings have received over the past couple weeks, with the whole Nielsen race becoming a sort of pre-election election, there's always a few more ballots to be found somewhere.

The bottom-line point to extract from all these numbers is that last week few would have predicted that McCain would draw an audience that compared to Obama's. Attendance of their live appearances have been pretty unequal. By any viewership measurement, McCain managed to roughly match his opponent last night, indicating that interest in the candidates may not be as disproportionate as some have assumed.

Focusing strictly on the official Nielsen-reported networks, McCain drew significantly more male viewers than Obama (16.2 million). McCain also drew more white viewers (32.2 million), while Obama was seen by more black viewers.

Though anticipation has been running high for McCain's address, the speech also may have benefited slightly from a strong NFL lead-in on NBC. Initially Republicans feared McCain might have to compete with the game for viewers' attention. But the NFL match started early, then put about 13.6 million viewers on the doorstep of NBC's 10 p.m. coverage of McCain's speech.

Still, NBC has aired the most-watched convention coverage among the broadcaster nets all week, and its numbers compared to rivals were not much different than on previous nights. In other words: The game may have helped, but it wasn't a major factor in McCain's massive viewership (even with the NBC receiving an NFL lead-in, Fox News is expected to win the network-by-network breakdown).

Also, with interest in his running mate Sarah Palin spiking viewership for the RNC on Wednesday, the convention was able to gain some significant momentum after losing its first night to Hurricane Gustav coverage. McCain received 5% more viewers than his running mate.

UPDATE:

FOX NEWS: 9.1 MILLION
NBC: 8.7 MILLION
ABC: 6 MILLION
CBS: 5.3 MILLION
CNN: 4.8 MILLION
MSNBC: 2.5 MILLION

(from 10 p.m. to 11:15 p.m.)

UPDATE II: Obama gives O'Reilly a ratings bump

Bill O'Reilly's pre-RNC coverage interview with Sen. Barack Obama on Thursday brought "The O'Reilly Factor" the second-highest ratings in its history -- 6.6 million viewers.

Don't get too happy McCain. This is mainly because Democrats wanted to hear what you had to say as well.

The republican's number manipulation games again.
Prepare for another stolen election!!

Good, America saw how bad and unconnected the speech was....ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Not sure that's a good thing, if you're a McCain supporter. It wasn't his greatest speech. Most watched / worst convention speech ever?

Good for McCain and good for America. About 500,000 more people got to see how much of a duchebag he is.

Good, America saw how bad and unconnected the speech was....ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Will anyone notice that the Republicans were the ones responsible for everything he wanted to change -- including him!? I have never seen such manipulation of the public to get votes. It scares me.

We came, we saw (most of it) and we fell asleep.

I think it is wonderful that 40 million heard him speak for 45 minutes and not say anything.

John McCain wants to top his father and grandfather. See they were commanding Generals in major wars. The only way John McCain can top them is to be President and start his own war. John ambition for the oval office is just to start a war. He will not just be satified to cleanup Bush wars. He wants his own war with his name on it. Just look at his campaign logo – it has a Admiral Star on it. This Star is what he could not get in the Navy…

John McCain admitted last night in his Acceptance speech that he SOLD OUT AMERICA while a POW. Is this Country First? The media need to tell young voters what he meant when he said he Broke in the POW Camp. The young voters MUST BE TOLD the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth by the Media. Do not let John McCain get away with just a blank statement "I Broke under pressure".

sounds like rove fuzzy math bs

So glad the public tuned in. McCain gave an awful speech. No new policy initiatives to change the direction of the country. Deeply focused on the war we lost 30 years ago. Looking back in anger. Poor shnook, I would have felt sorry for him but I was fighting just to stay awake.

I'm sure McCains daily tracking polls are starting to crater. After the election McCain can go around and get acuainted with all the houses Cindy bought. And take a much deserved snooze.

Maybe because Democrats are more engaged in hearing both sides of the argument.

Actually; the numbers are so high only because half of those people have been using McCain's speeches as a great fall asleep tool. This Thursday was the best of all!!!! I fell asleep during the first 5 minutes!!! But then again, I guess Cindy already made me nod off after taking some medication to keep my stomach calm!!

First time I fell asleep my couch before 11PM in years. Probably caught the first half hour before being bored to sleep, unless it get much much better wouldn't give it better than a "D+".

After the speech McCain gave, maybe his camp is wishing that this was one contest McCain had lost.

I'm just saying....

Anyone can watch teevee. WE filled a stadium beyond capacity. Eat THAT McShame/Failin' !!!

Good, then 38.8 million people saw an Iraq War vet with the obviously true statement "You can't win an occupation" and the truth about McCain's veteran votes: "McCain Votes Against Vets."

Yup, the numbers were higher as Democrats actually care what the other party has to say. Of course, what was said was more of the SAME. Their 9/11 "Tribute" was more a face of who the party is, very scary.

I turned the TV off half way through the speech. Can't stand the lies and streching the truth any more!

too bad it was the worst speech in the history of political conventions, people falling asleep and poor guy unable to stay with the prompter.

McCain really had 25.3 Million viewers when you look at it, NBC televised the RNC Convention right after the NFL Game b/w Giants and Redskins, so what did they expect..........

I'm glad people tuned in. That speech was terrible. So boring, so confusing, so vapid and vague....

The bad news is... they heard his speech.

Snoozer. Trying to distance himself from his own record and an administration he has voted with 90% of the time. He represents the wealthy, the greedy, and those who would keep us afraid and divided.

No Way! No How! No McCain!

We can just leave Palin out of it... she is puppet with a fresh package for the neocons to manipulate...do you honestly think they'd let 'her' run this country???

As an Obama supporter, I watched both conventions to be informed, and not many of my Republican friends tuned into Obama. I think that's the difference... the Obama supporters watched both to be informed and McCain supporters didn't take time to be thoroughly informed by both sides.

They must have counted all those folks who had to wait a few seconds to switch channels to find something else to watch, after the football game.

Took me a minute or two.

Yeah, being a democrat I wanted to see how he would address the issues. What a disappointment. It was more of an introduction on who he is. Geez what a lame duck and he's not even our president. Thank God. I will vote Obama for the real change WE, the UNITED State can believe in. Peace.

I'm glad people tuned in. That speech was terrible. So boring, so confusing, so vapid and vague....

Thats a lot of voters who now know the McCain has no plan other then Sarah, Sarah, Sarah and that once again he is using religious right as Bush did the past 2 elections. Just empty untruthful attacks and the politics of fear. I have no doubt that the republicans love this country, but they also look down and disrespect half the people in it.

Yes, I watched, just to hear what he had to say. Nothing. His people have canvassed, & he promised everything everybody wants. That's easy for him, because he's used to twisting the truth and/or lying. I kept dozing off, but I did did see two people in the audience yawning. Anybody who falls for this guy must also believe in fairy tales. McCain is the big bad wolf.

As usual the traditional measurement (like polls) is not taking into account the people that watched it on the internet, or who stood in street squares, or who sat in watch parties. Plus the 84,000 in the stadium I am sure the total is the same if not more for Obama.

I hope they are correct. That was the best speech McCain could give and it said absolutely nothing and made me think of George Bush 2004. I am glad others saw it for themselves, that way I don't have say a word, they can't make their own conclusions.

I'm glad that many people watched his speech and they saw he said nothing about what he was going to do about our economy, health care and the things that's important to the American people in their lives right now. Yeah he really hit it out the park. I find it hard to believe well kinda laughable that a 72 year old man is saying he is the one to bring about change, hillarious.

I take this as bad news for McCain. By most accounts, the speech was a dud. Obama/Biden 2008!!!!!
