The debut of CBS' reality show "Greatest American Dog" won its time period with a modest performance Thursday night.
"Dog" (9.5 million viewers, 2.1 adults 18 to 49 rating and an 8 share) edged out Fox's "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" to win 8 p.m., though was down 9% from last summer's debut of CBS' "Pirate Master." CBS placed second for the evening after Fox in demo (and first in total viewers), with "Dog," a repeat and then "Swingtown" (5.4 million, 1.7/5).
"Grader" (7 million, 2.0/7) delivered its best rating so far this summer, leading into night-topping "So You Think You Can Dance" (8.7 million, 3.0/9).
NBC was third with "Last Comic Standing" (5 million, 2.1/6). ABC was fourth with repeats and "Hopkins" (5.5 million, 1.5/5). The CW had repeats (averaging 1.9, 0.7/2).
